Three new sports to try in 2023

Have you been looking for a new way to get your exercise in?

Whether you’re bored of your existing fitness regimen, looking to cram even more physical activity into your schedule, or simply want to get out and about with a new hobby, then trying a new sport could be for you. As well as keeping you fit and healthy, getting involved in a new sport can open you up to a whole new crowd of friends as well, meaning it’s good for your mental health too and expands you horizons socially.

But there are so many sports out there – how do you know which one to choose? We’ve made this handy list of ideas to help you pick out your new favourite pastime.

  • Tennis

You don’t have to go to Wimbledon to enjoy bright green lawns and strawberries and cream – tennis is a fantastic game that can be enjoyed by anyone, and can become a lifelong hobby that brings joy for years to come. Whether you want to throw your tennis racket on the ground and shout ‘you cannot be serious’ at the umpire or gracefully shake your opponent’s hand at the end of a match, tennis is a highly enjoyable, competitive game which boasts an active community of avid players and followers – this game could be the perfect way to spice up your free time and exercise regime.

  • Rugby

Exciting and fast-paced, the game of rugby is an intense full-contact game which really takes you out of your comfort zone and keeps you on your toes. Though not for the fainthearted (and with some risk of injury and ruined clothes!) rugby fosters a strong team spirit and camaraderie – not to mention that rugby clubs have a reputation for having some of the best social events around, meaning joining a team can be just as good for your social life as for your health!

  • Running

One of the simplest and cheapest go-to sports, running is a fantastic way to keep fit and also has proven mental health benefits. It’s a great way to challenge yourself, get to know your local area if you’re an outdoor runner, and can be a great opportunity to listen to a podcast, a new album, or to just be alone with your thoughts. While often thought of as a solitary sport, running can also be sociable; most towns have at least a couple of active running groups, for beginners or advanced runners alike, and joining one can be a great way to stay motivated and meet new friends.

Hopefully at least one of the sports on this list tickled your fancy – if so, get out there and start playing!
